Episode 0 - Introduction

Hello, welcome to the business breakthrough radio show. I’m so excited to share with you today. Over the past 2 decades of studying business owners from all over the world I have found ONE simple key that ensures success. This is not a complex principle and it is a principle that has stood the test of thousands of years. It is a word that accompanies every person of high success. It is a word that is not fun but yet it inspires us. Any idea of what it is? It is the word “coachability”. Now you might ask WHY I would choose that word. I know, I know you think I’m biased because I’m in the top 3% of coaches in the world. Haha, but no, that’s not why.

Coachability has requirements of us. It requires awareness. It requires acknowledging when we are wrong. It requires drive and fight. It requires learning. It requires action. It requires accountability. Do you know how to ensure absolute failure in your business and life? It’s quite simple, don’t be coachable. So if you are the type of person who has it all figured out, then please don’t join us. If you are not coachable, you aren’t invited to this podcast. If you aren’t willing to put in the hard work then please don’t listen.

So the reason we are starting this podcast here at Higher Impact is to help you know what you don’t know. One of the first elements of our coaching process is creating awareness. Once you know it, you can begin to change it right?

It reminds me of a story of a ship owner who’s engine wouldn’t run on his ship. He called in every expert and no one could figure out how to fix the ship. They had given up all hope, but one of his crew members remembered an old retired repairman who used to work on the ship. They searched everywhere and finally found him and convinced him to come to the ship. He went into the engine room with a small little tote stuffed with tools in every pocket imaginable. The owner of the ship was standing there as the repairman inspected the ship. After several minutes of inspecting the ship he turned to the ship owner and said dryly, “I can fix your ship”. The owner was ecstatic. He said, “how much will it cost?!” The repairman said $10,000. The ship owner knew the value of his ship and the money he was losing each day his ship was grounded. So he reluctantly agreed to pay it. The repairman dug in his tools and found a ball peen hammer. He went over to a spot on the engine block and gave it three small taps. And miraculously the engine started! The owner was dumbfounded but struggled because of how quickly the ship was fixed. He said to the repairman “why should I pay you $10,000 to just tap on my engine. Please give me an itemized receipt for this.” The old repairman took out a small pad of paper and wrote on it:

  1. Tapping with the hammer – $1
  2. Knowing where to tap with the hammer: $9,999

The moral of this story is that we can have action on many things. We can work hard all day long. But knowing WHERE to focus is 99% of the battle. This is why coaching has a 400% return on investment. Because you don’t know what you don’t know.
